5 Of The Most Amazing Places To Cycle In The World

Don’t let the weather get you down! Instead, you could be planning your next cycling adventure! If you’re bored of the same mundane commute to work and tired of your usual routes then why not spend a bit of time researching some of the world’s most amazing cycling routes? Of course, some of them are beyond the bucket list and situated well within the realm of ‘unfeasible’ but there are a few quality adventures to be had that are surprisingly affordable. Below, we’ve listed a few our favourite journeys that the world has to offer. Get inspired, get researching, get booked and then go!

Take To The Desert: Morocco

Morocco is only a short hop away from continental Europe, accessed easily by ferry operators and budget airlines, which makes it a very attractive place for any bike tourist! Morocco is a fairly popular tourist destination which means that it’s serviced with a whole load of useful infrastructure but it’s also wild enough to entice intrepid travelers too. Some of the most popular rides and routes include Agadir to Essaouira via the coast or from Marrakech to the Sahara desert through the Draa Valley. Exploring the dunes on two wheels promises to be an incredible adventure.

Coast Rider: The North Sea Route

From the Shetland Islands in Scotland to Bergen on the west coast of Norway, this epic 6000km route takes you around the coast of the North Sea, through the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. It’s a very long route but you don’t have to tackle it all at once! There are so many picturesque sections that you can start and end the route anywhere without feeling like you’ve made a compromise. The vast majority of the route is on bicycle specific paths or quiet roads, which is ideal for novice or advanced riders alike! The only downside to this route is the weather – it’s Northern Europe after all, so timing is crucial!

For The Thrill Seekers: Bolivia

We’re talking about the ‘world’s most dangerous road’, ‘the Death Road’ or ‘Camino de la Muerte’…despite it’s frightening title, the mountain road boasts some incredible and dramatic scenery through mountain ranges and picturesque forests. The main draw is it’s spectacular descent from 11,800 feet down into the jungle, with an epic 64km of pure downhill joy.

They might give it a frightening name but the route is enjoyed by amateur cyclists and professionals alike. Fortunately, the road doesn’t see the same usage that it once did, so traffic is pretty light. Even so, it’s not for the faint hearted!

The Call Of The Mountains: China

It’s hard to read an adventure cycling blog without the term ‘Friendship Highway’ cropping up somewhere and here’s why: the road traverses south west China to the Nepalese border, at an incredibly high altitude, under the shadow of world’s highest mountain range: the Himalayas. From Lhasa to Katmandu, the route is one of the most stunning and scenic that the world has to offer, featuring snowcapped mountains, icy lakes, breathtaking waterfalls and miles upon miles of picturesque highway, winding through the landscape. The region is remote and requires a bit of planning – this one is for the keenest of adventure cyclist only!

West Coast USA: The Pacific Coast

The west coast of the United States has some of the best cycle paths in the world. From Washington State in the North West, through the densely forested State of Oregon and on to sunny California, there’s no shortage of adventure to be had. Expect huge forests, stunning ocean views and mile upon mile of pristine cycle path. There are plenty of tour operators who can organize this for you but come on, our friends across the pond speak English, the areas are incredibly well mapped and getting lost is part of the fun!
